There’s

1. who we are,

2. who we fear we might be,

3. who we strive to be to avoid being who we fear we might be,

and, 4. who we resort to being when our hurt and shame gets triggered.

We are a self made of non-self parts.

This multiplicity of self is what allows us to offer ourselves the kind of empathic attention that invites clarity, resolve, and growth.

This week we go further with understanding manager parts and what they need from us in order to loosen their grip.

Week 2 Meditation:
Please alternate between the Parts Work Meditation and Heart Breathing Meditation from day to day.

IN THIS LESSON

WEEK 2 HANDOUT
  • Watch/re-watch the movie Inside Out (1 and/or 2!)

Notice the correlations between this movie’s presentation of how our emotions work and the IFS/parts work model.

Fun fact: Pixar is making a sequel to Inside Out and the people who developed IFS are acting as consultants on the film because the parallels are so strong.

JOURNAL PROMPT: WEEK 2

Inner Conversations: Our strong habit is to turn away from our emotional experience. This past week, we began turning towards it. This work can be challenging, beautiful, liberating, confusing, cathartic, overwhelming, joyful … And all of this is useful information. Our experience while doing this work is a communication we’re receiving from our bodies. This meaningful feedback from our own nervous systems and unconscious minds is information we actually can’t get anywhere else. With that in mind, what’s it been like for you this week? What have you noticed? You can tell us in general, or use these questions to guide you:

• What manager parts have you worked with?

• What have they revealed to you about their jobs and what they’d rather be doing?

•  Are they “buying in” to the parts-work process?

Journal privately for 10-20 minutes on this.
